Courses Offered

RECREATIONAL PILOT PERMIT

Age: The candidate shall be a minimum of 16 years of age.

Medical: A minimum of a valid Class IV medical is required.

Knowledge: The applicant should have 40 hours of ground school. An applicant shall obtain a minimum of 60% in each of the four mandatory subject areas:

  1. Air Law
  2. Navigation
  3. Meteorology
  4. Aeronautics as well as in the overall written exam Pilot Permit Recreational Aeroplane (RPPAE)

Experience: The applicant shall have completed 25 flying hours pilot flight training in aeroplanes under the direction and supervision of the holder of a flight instructor rating-aeroplane. The flight training shall include a minimum of 15 hours dual flight instruction time, including a minimum of two hours cross country time and 5 hours of Solo flight time. A flight test shall be administered to determine the applicant meets the standards as outlined in Flight Test Standards TP1 2475

Privileges: The Recreational Pilot Permit will allow the Pilot to carry only one passenger in a single engine aeroplane of 4 seats or less. All flights shall be conducted during daylight hours in VFR weather conditions and only in Canada.


PRIVATE PILOT LICENCE


Age: Minimum of 17 years old.

Medical: A Class I or a Class 3 medical is required. The medical shall be done by a Transport Canada approved medical examiner.

Knowledge: An applicant shall have completed a minimum of 40 hours private pilot aeroplane ground school instruction on the following subjects: Canadian Air Regulations (CARs) Aerodynamics and Theory of Flight, Meteorology, Airframes Engines and Systems, Flight Instruments, Radio and Electronic Theory, Navigation, Flight Operations, Licencing Requirements, and Human Factors including Pilot Decision making. A minimum of 60% must be obtained on the Transport Canada written test as well as in each of the four mandatory subject areas.

Experience: An applicant shall have completed a minimum of 45 hours Private Pilot flight training in aeroplanes under the direction and supervision of the holder of a Flight Instructor Rating - Aeroplane.

The flight training shall include a minimum of 17 hours dual instruction flight time, including a minimum of 3 hours cross-country (x/c) flight time and 5 hours of instrument time of which a maximum of 3 hours may be instrument ground time. 12 hours solo flight time includes 5 hours x/c flight time with a flight of a minimum of 150 nautical miles which shall include 2 full stop landings at points other than the point of departure. A flight test shall be administered to determine the applicant meets the standards as outlined in Flight Test Standard - Aeroplanes (TP2655E)

Privileges

401.26

The holder of a Private Pilot Licence - aeroplane may act as PlC (Pilot-in-Command) or Co-Pilot of an aeroplane of a class and type in respect of which the licence is endorsed with ratings;

  • Pilot-in-Command or Co-Pilot of any aircraft for the sole purpose of the holderís flight training or flight test where in the case of Flight Training, it is conducted under the direction and supervision of the holder of a flight instructor rating for that category of aircraft, and no passenger is carried on board, and in the case of a flight test, it is conducted in accordance with section 401.15, and
  • No passenger other than the person referred to in paragraph 401.1 5(1)(a) is camed on board.
401.15
  1. No person shall conduct a flight test required for the issuance or renewal of a flight crew permit or licence or the endorsement of a flight crew permit or licence with a rating unless the person is designated by the Minister to conduct the flight test, and the flight test is conducted in accordance with the personnel licencing standards and the appropriate flight test standard.
  2. The Minister shall maintain a record of each flight test required for the issuance or renewal of a flight crew permit or licence for an aeroplane or helicopter or the endorsement of such a permit or licence with a rating.

NIGHT ENDORSEMENT

Experience: The applicant shall have a minimum of a private pilot licence before commencing the course. The course consists of a minimum of 5 hours dual night instruction flight time, including a minimum of 2 hours cross-country (x/c) flight time, 10 hours of instrument time, and 5 hours solo night flight time including a minimum of 10 takeoffs, full circuits and landings.


COMMERCIAL PILOT LICENCE

Age: Minimum of 18 years old.

Medical: Class I - The medical shall be done by an approved Transport Canada doctor.

Knowledge: An applicant shall have completed a minimum of 40 hours commercial aeroplane ground school instruction, on the following subjects....Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs), Aerodynamics and Theory of Flight, Meteorology, Airframes Engines and Systems, Flight Instruments, Radio and Electronic Theory, Navigation, Flight Operations, Licencing Requirements, and Human Factors including Pilot Decision Making. The written test (CPAER) requires a minimum of 60% on each of the four mandatory subject areas as well as an overall average of 60%.

Experience: An applicant shall have completed a minimum of 200 hours flight time in aeroplanes, of which a minimum of 100 hours shall be pilot-in-command time including 20 hours cross-country PlC flight time.

An applicant shall, following the issue of a Private Pilot Licence - Aeroplane by Canada or another Contracting State, have completed 65 hours of commercial pilot flight training in aeroplanes consisting of a minimum of 35 hours dual instruction flight time, including 5 hours night, including a minimum of 2 hours of cross country flight time: 5 hours cross country, which may include the cross-country experience from the night; and 20 hours of instrument flight time in addition to previous experience, and 30 hours solo flight time including 25 hours solo flight time emphasizing the improvement of general flying skills of the applicant. Included is a cross-country flight to a point of a minimum of 300 nautical mile radius from the point of departure and shall include a minimum of 3 landings at points other than that of departure; 5 hours solo flight time by night during which a minimum of 10 takeoffs, circuits and landings were completed. A flight test shall be administered to determine the applicant meets the standard as outlined in Flight Test Standard - Aeroplane (TP2655E)

Privileges:

401.30

  1. The holder of a commercial pilot licence - aeroplane may exercise the privileges of a private pilot licence - aeroplane, and those of a VFR OTT rating. The holder of a commercial pilot licence may also, while engaged in providing a commercial air service by means of an aeroplane of a class and type in respect of which the licence is endorsed with ratings, act as PlC of the aeroplane, where the minimum flight crew document for the aeroplane specifies a minimum flight crew of one pilot, and co-pilot of the aeroplane.
  2. Where an applicant meets the requirements specified in the personnel licencing standards in respect of a commercial pilot licence aeroplane except the night flight time requirements, the Minister shall issue to the applicant a commercial pilot licence - aeroplane endorsed for daylight flying only.
  3. No holder of a commercial pilot licence - aeroplane whose licence is endorsed with a daylight-flying-only restriction shall exercise the privileges of a private pilot licence - aeroplane, the privileges of a VFR OTT rating, and the privileges while engaged in providing a commercial air service by means of an aeroplane of a class and type in respect of which the licence is endorsed with ratings, act as PlC of the aeroplane, where the minimum flight crew document for the aeroplane specifies a minimum flight crew of one pilot, and co-pilot of the aeroplane by night.

VFR OVER THE TOP

An applicant shall hold a valid pilot licence with a valid medical.

Knowledge: An applicant for a VFR OTT rating shall acquire a standard of knowledge in accordance with the Flight Instructor Standard - VFR OTT

Experience: An applicant for a VFR OTT rating shall complete a minimum of 15 hours dual instrument time of which 5 hours may be instrument ground time. Training shall be done in accordance with the Flight Instructor Standard - VFR OTT.

Skill: An applicant for a VFR OTT rating shall have reached the level of skill specified in the Flight Instructor Standard - VFR OTT.

Credits: An applicant for a VFR OTT rating who holds, or has held a licence endorsed for an instrument rating shall be deemed to have met the Knowledge, Experience and Skill Requirements specified above, and shall be issued a VFR OTT on request.


INSTRUCTOR RATING

Prerequisites:

  1. Before commencing flight training for the Class 4 Instructor Rating, an applicant shall hold a Commercial or Airline Transport Pilot Licence - Aeroplane and have completed a minimum of 20 hours instrument time, of which a minimum of 10 hours shall be instrument flight time.
  2. Before commencing ground training for the Class 4 instructor Rating, an applicant shall have successfully completed the written examination and flight test for the Commercial Pilot Licence - Aeroplane.
Knowledge: An applicant shall have completed a minimum of 25 hours of Instructor Rating ground school instruction which shall include:
  • Practical application of the basic principles of learning and techniques of instruction;
  • Preparation and use of lesson plans;
  • Procedures for planning and presenting preparatory ground instruction, pre-flight briefings, in-flight instruction, and post-flight debriefings;
  • theory of flight required to teach the air exercises;
  • aircraft flight manuals and aircraft operating limits;
  • presentation of pilot decision - making concepts and the use of Transport Canada Flight Instructor Guide, Flight Training Manual, Canadian Aviation Regulations, Part IV and the Flight Test Standards.

An applicant shall obtain a minimum of 70% in the written examination Flight Instructor Rating - Aeroplane Class 4 (AIRAF)

Experience: An applicant shall complete in aeroplanes a minimum of 30 hours of dual flight instruction on overall pilot proficiency and the presentation of all exercises set forth in the Flight Instructor Guide and shall include a minimum of 5 hours of training in the teaching of instrument flight skills. A maximum 5 of the 30 hours may be conducted on an approved aeroplane simulator or flight training device.

Skill: An applicant shall complete an instructor flight test to the standard outlined in the Flight Test Standard - Flight Instructor Rating (TP5537)
